Mexican students had an outstanding performance in this year’s edition of the Romanian robotics competition Robochallenge, winning eight medals in total: three gold, two silver and three bronze.

The Phoenix team from the Poza Rica Institute of Technology (TecNM) in Veracruz, made up of four mechatronics students, won gold and silver medals in the Mini Sumo category while a team from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) won bronze in the same category.

The IPN team also swept the Micro Sumo category with three of their robots.

A second team from TecNM, students of electronics, mechatronics, and computer systems, also won gold and bronze, in their case in the Humanoid category, with two of their robots.

The tournament saw 198 robots competing in 10 categories, represented by 280 students from 80 teams, drawing participants from countries such as Romania, Brazil, Turkey and Bulgaria.

Team Phoenix won three first places, one second and one third in the ninth edition of the War of Robots National Contest, hosted by IPN in September, and qualified for the robotics competitions Brazilian Summer Challenge 2015, the U.S. 2016 Robogames and 2016 Robotwar, in Turkey.

The team’s next challenge is approaching. In December they’ll travel to Tokyo, Japan, to compete in the All Japan Robot-Sumo Tournament, considered by experts as the most prestigious robotics cup in the world.

Robochallenge is a competition organized by the ETTI ROBOCHALLENGE team in collaboration with the League of Electronics Students, and is hosted by the Politehneca University of Bucharest, Romania.
