BENGALURU: The higher education system in the state will be completely digitalised soon.

The state Higher Education Department has started implementation of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) from the current academic year at all the universities across the state.

The department is implementing the project in association with the Karnataka State Higher Education Council.

The project report, prepared by Higher Education Department Principal Secretary Bharath Lal Meena, a copy of which is available with Express, highlights the various problems with the examination system at the higher education level.

The project is being operated on a pilot basis at a few universities, including the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru; Tumkur University and Mangalore University.

According to officials involved with the project, it involves circulation of question papers online, digital evaluation, online declaration of results and admissions.

Elaborating on the project, Meena said, “This is a project to digitise the entire higher education system in our universities. We have not fixed any time frame on completion of the project as it needs to be done phase-wise.”

Meena, however, said the main idea of the project came after receiving several complaints from the public and stake holders as well as media reports about malpractices and mismanagement during examinations.

“We are doing it as part of our higher education reforms,” he said.

Under this system, everything will be centralised and all processes of universities regarding examinations will be recorded at the department’s dedicated portal, he said.

“The National Informatics System (NIC) has designed the software and Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) the hardware. The universities will only authorise it.”

The project report also highlights the major issues and challenges faced by universities and colleges in the examination process.

solution includes many modules

Comprehensive examination management solution typically includes modules like student registration for issue of hall tickets, question bank/question paper bank generation, secure delivery of question papers, OMR and barcode technology in answer sheets, digital scanning and onscreen evaluation of answer sheets, results processing and publication, online application for reevaluation, degrees and certificates in demat form.
